La Flèche : how to design a home for long-term living

How to design a house as an evolving home that meets the needs of a lifetime?

This was the challenge we took on with a young couple, who owned a beautiful piece of land by a lake in the Lanaudière region. Their dream: a house that combines the charm of a cottage with the comfort of a main residence, ready to welcome children, adapt to the constraints of remote work, and allow them to age peacefully on the lake’s shores. In this article, discover how we brought this dream to life by creating an evolving home, designed to adapt and last a lifetime.

Project Context

When this dynamic young couple decided to buy a plot of land by the lake in the beautiful Lanaudière region, they knew they wanted more than just a house. Their vision was clear: to create a unique living space that combined the natural charm of a vacation cottage with the modern comfort of a main residence. Nature lovers, they chose this site not only for its tranquility but also for the beauty of the trees surrounding the property, an essential element they wanted to preserve at all costs.

The couple, both in their thirties and active in the professional world, spend part of their time working from home. Therefore, they needed two separate and well-insulated workspaces to avoid interruptions caused by phone calls and meetings. They also wanted to divide their living space into two zones: a calm zone for reading and contemplation, and a more lively area for activities with friends, such as a billiard table and a TV corner. But their expectations went beyond their current needs. They envisioned their home as an evolving space, capable of adapting to the different stages of their lives: welcoming children, hosting family and friends, and ultimately offering them a place to grow old comfortably.

Challenges

Designing an evolving home on a site rich in natural features presented several challenges. The first, and perhaps most important, was environmental preservation. The couple wanted their house to blend harmoniously into the landscape, without disturbing the local ecosystem. This meant minimizing the building’s footprint to preserve as many trees as possible, which immediately ruled out the possibility of a single-story building, despite its accessibility advantages.

We opted for a hybrid design, combining both vertical and horizontal volumes. This choice reduced the footprint while offering breathtaking views of the lake from every level.

The other major challenge was creating a home that could adapt to the owners' future needs while meeting their current ones. Every space had to be flexible and versatile, allowing for a smooth transition as the couple aged and their family grew while ensuring a functional and comfortable environment at every stage of their life.

These environmental and functional challenges were central to every design decision. The result is a house that not only respects the natural environment but is also ready to evolve with its inhabitants throughout their lives.

Evolving Design

The solution to these challenges lies in an ingenious design. This house’s design doesn’t just meet the couple’s current needs; it also anticipates their future ones by incorporating practical solutions that allow the home to evolve over time. This proactive approach is reflected in several key aspects of the design.

Space Organization

The house is organized across three floors, each designed to offer adaptability and comfort.

Basement: Versatile Space

The basement, designed as an open space, offers great flexibility for future uses, such as storage, a studio, or a playroom. Its modularity ensures easy adaptation according to the couple’s needs.

Ground Floor: The Heart of the Home

The ground floor is the heart of the home, gathering the main living spaces: the living room, dining room, and kitchen. This level is designed with a single-story layout, offering direct access to the outdoor terrace, enhancing the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. A guest bedroom adjacent to a full bathroom is also located on this floor.

Upper Floor: Bedroom Privacy

The upper floor is dedicated to the main bedrooms, offering a private space for the couple. Since the couple doesn’t have children yet, some rooms can serve as offices or studios and can change purpose over time.

Future Flexibility

The home’s adaptability isn’t limited to its initial layout; each floor has been designed to evolve with the couple’s needs.

Transformable Guest Room

As the couple ages, the guest room on the ground floor can be converted into the main bedroom. This will allow them to avoid stairs while continuing to enjoy all the home’s amenities on one level. The second floor, currently dedicated to the main bedrooms, could then be reconfigured as a suite to welcome children and grandchildren during their visits.

Modular Spaces

The storage space located above the laundry room, adjacent to the vestibule, has been strategically designed to be modular. Over time, this space could accommodate washer-dryer units, thus grouping all essential functions on the ground floor, making everyday life easier as the couple ages.

Restructuring Open Spaces

The open spaces in the basement and ground floor have been designed to be easily restructured. This flexibility ensures that the house will remain functional and comfortable at every stage of the owners' lives.

Long-Term Benefits

Quality of Life

The evolving design of this home offers the couple invaluable peace of mind. Knowing that they won’t have to move as their needs change, whether due to the arrival of children or the challenges of aging, allows them to focus on their lives without the stress of major adjustments to their living space.

Sustainable Investment

Investing in a house designed to evolve over time is not only a wise personal choice but also a smart investment. In the long run, this evolving home reduces the need for costly renovations or moves, which results in significant savings.

Sustainable evolution: Living in harmony with nature today and tomorrow

This project highlights the importance of an evolving design to create a home capable of adapting to the different stages of life. Every design decision was guided by both environmental and functional challenges, resulting in a house that respects the natural environment while being ready to evolve with its inhabitants over time. Thanks to flexible living spaces, modular bedrooms, and multiple areas to set up workspaces, this home offers the couple a peaceful, comfortable, and sustainable living environment.
